My Linux history or should I say my history with linux

Submitted By: Fred Date: May 15, 2024, 10:28 AM Views: 96

I will try not to bore you with all the details but still give you a history of my journey with Linux. My journey starts over 20 years ago. I do not recall the exact date. I had a windows ME computer back then and I was on a book store web site and looking at some computer books to buy. If I remember correctly the book store was only computer related books. Anyway the book store it self is not important just that I was on there and found a book all about linux. So I purchased the book and several other books as well. When the book showed up in the mail I looked through it and saw that it had a red hat install cd so you could follow along in the book and get a linux machine up and running. However even following every thing the book said I was unable to get red had linux working. However this spark and interest in linux and with the massive issues I has having with Windows ME I though I would try again. This time I was on amazon and found linux on there. This time it was Mandrake linux. I purchased mandrake from amazon and when it came I tried it out. This time I got it to work and boy was it fun. I had the computer set up in a dual boot, windows ME and mandrake linux. I have to admit back then I did spend more time on windows as it had the programs I needed to get things done and I still was not all the familiar with linux. When I did boot into linux I mainly played the Tron game that it came with. That game is fun and still available too here is the link if you want to check it out  https://www.armagetronad.org/ .

I was using mandrake for a long time and had purchased a few updates, not from amazon this time but directly from the mandrake site. I know some people may ask why I didn't just download the iso. Well 2 reasons, back then I still had dial up and one of the times mandrake was selling the distro it came with a stuffed Penguin which I still have. Plus the first few times I purchased linux I didn't know you could download it. So maybe that is 3 reasons. Any way back in 2005 mandrake had to change their name and I tried to use it under the new name but it didn't seem the same or as good. So I eventually went looking at other distros. I think I did some distro hopping and eventually ended up finding corel linux, which lead to getting a distro called Xandros which is based on corel linux. I loved this distro and at this time I stopped dual booting and was on linux full time. I was even able to install this distro on my work computer.  I did also purchase this one mainly because the paid version came with crossover office.  Which allowed for easier install of windows software. I was no longer on dial up at the time but the paid version was the reason I stopped the dual boot as I no longer needed windows at all. I used xandros for many years until around 2009 when the distro was discontinued. I may have used it for a while after 2009, maybe into 2010.

After that I distro hopped again, I forgot all the different distros I tried and at this point I was just downloading them and not paying for them as I did in the past. I do recall sadly ending up back on windows in 2013 but I had also bought a gaming lenovo desktop with windows 7 and was playing games for a few years. I still played around with different linux distros but was back in a dual boot. Around 2015 and close to 2016 I got out of gaming and went back to linux full time again. This time I was on a distro that I honestly forgot the name of. I have been trying to recall the name for some time but it is not coming to me. I know it was based on ubuntu and may have been one of those third party version of ubuntu, meaning it had ubuntu in the name but was not made by ubuntu. For all I can recall it may have been ubuntu Christain edition but that is still around and has not been discontinued. Although it is possible it actually was that one and it was discontinued and brought back, I may have to look into that. Well I did some googling and that may actually be it and what happened so guess it is good that that distro is back. Anyway I ran that distro for a long time until about 2019 or 2020 when it was also discontinued. So was back distro hopping which really has not stopped but I have been using Tuxedo OS and Nobara Linux for several months now and I like both of them. I use the Nobara on a new gaming computer that I got a year ago.  A few distros that I currently like and are on my favorites list are listed below.

Tuxedo OS
POP os
Nobara
Voyager live
Sparky linux
Perperment linux
Trom Jaro
